The Shillings
Mark Jennings and Tom Ross started the original Shillings group, which included Mark (bass, vocals), Tom (guitar, vocals), Al Michailoff (lead guitar) and Ned Earley (drums). In 1967 the line-up was changed to Tom Ross (lead guitar, vocals), Mark Jennings (bass, vocals), Jeff Davis (organ) and Hub Willson (drums). Their first recording was a cover of "Barbara Ann" in late 1965, which was withdrawn when the Beach Boys released their version shortly after. In 1966, their first record, "Laugh," reached number 5 in the Allentown area. The next single, "Lyin & Tryin," written by Tom Ross, stayed on the charts for five weeks in Allentown, Connecticut and Boston. The Shillings were managed by Dale Schneck who also managed the Dooley Invention, an Allentown group who recorded some original songs by the Shillings songwriting team of Jennings & Ross.
