The Lehigh Valley / Allentown, PA area, at one time, was a hotbed of musical talent, influenced mainly by the British Invasion groups of the day as well as American bands like the Critters (whose first album was a big influence on the Limits and Shillings who incorporated Critters songs in their repertoire). Most of the groups played regularly at under-21 clubs such as the Mad Hatter, the Mod Mill, King Arthur's Court, the Purple Owl and Dorney Amusement Park. Bands also played at the many local colleges such as Muhlenberg, Lehigh, Lafayette and Cedar Crest. Downtown Allentown was alive with cool record stores, clothes and radio stations like WAEB which played many local bands' records. There was even a record manufacturing plant, Allentown Record Company, that pressed some of the earliest Beatles Vee-Jay records. |
